Abstract
In pot test, when the field soil naturally infested with Pythium aphanidermatum (Pa) and P. spinosum (Ps) was treated with steam (100 C, 1.5hr, twice) or fungicides (Ridomil-MZ, 400x or Dexon, 1000x, 100 ml / 2Kg) , it promoted the growth potential and reduced the damping off of cucumber plants compared with check plant. In laboratory tests, the optimum mycelial growth temperature (on Czapek’s agar) and optimum infection temperature (by seed testing method) of Pa-1 and Ps-1 were 32-36℃ and 24-28℃, respectively. However, by using tissue baiting technique, the optimum bait colonization temperature of Pa-1 was above 28℃ and Ps-1 was below 20℃. In greenhouse and field experiments, the isolations of Pythium species were made from cucumber rootlets grown in either nontreated soil (control ) or (S-H) mixture amended soil (1600 Kg / ha), and the results showed that the highest frequencies were recorded in summer ( above 27.2 C, daily average temperature) for Pa and in winter (below 18.2 C, daily average. temperature) for Ps. Therefore, the results suggested that temperature might influence the growth potential of host plant, the competition ability of soil microflora and the infectivity of Pa-1 and Ps-1 to the cucumber root.
