Abstract
Artificial substrates, such as sphagnum moss, bark mix, tree fern fibers, charcoal blocks, are usually adopted for commercial cultivation of orchid plants. Most of the cultivated orchids originated from their natural habitats as epiphytes or terrestrial. The growth requirements of these orchids are usually similar to their native habitats. By understanding their environmental conditions and growth habit, we can apply optimal mineral nutrients under proper light and temperature so that they attain the best growth. Chemical pesticides are used only when necessary to keep minimal pollution to the environment so that we can better manage sustainable cultivation. In this review, we will use phalaenopsis orchid as an example to describe plantlet production, cultivation management of young plants, potential damage caused by disease and pests, as well as the concept of health management of orchid plants.
