Abstract
Several species of whiteflies attack agriculture crops, and they typically have a
wide host range and widely occurred in Taiwan. The most common whiteflies on
vegetable crops, ornamentals and fruit crops are Bemisia tabaci complex species and the spiraling whitefly (Aleurodicus disperses Russell). It is difficult to efficiently
control them with single method. This paper summarizes the distribution, host range, damage and ways of control regarding several important whiteflies in Taiwan. The comparative toxicity of 12 registered insecticides on silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia argentifolii and its parasitioid, Eretmocerus orientalis, were tested in the field. The results show that 4 insecticides, acetamiprid, abamectin, imidacloprid and cartap, have high toxicity to both B. argentifolii and Er. orientalis. Moreover, methomyl, bifenthrin and decamethrin appear to show higher toxicity to all stages of Er. orientalis than B. argentifolii. On the contrary, other chemicals, such as
pyriproxyfen, azadirachtin, buprofezin, hexaflumuron and pymetrozin, appear to have a selective toxicity in which they are safer to the natural enemy Er. orientalis than to the host B. argentifolii. Results indicated that approach in the integrated use of systematic insecticides with parasitoids could increase the efficiency of controlling B. argentifolii on the poinsettia in net house.
