Abstract
“O-Shuh” (莪朮) is the dired rhizome of Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb. (Zingiberaceae) It was widely used to remove blood stasis, promote circulation of qi and relieve pain in clinical Chinese medicine. In recent years, it is also used to treat carcinoma of uterine cervix and angiocardiopathy. The EtOAc fraction of “O-Shuh” was found to show antiproliferative activity on human T-lymphoid leukemia cells. Chemical investigation of this fraction was then conducted to result in the isolation of four known compounds: curcumenol isocurcumenol zederone and curcumin. Among the isolates, curcumenol was the richest constituent. Pharmacological study indicated that these four compounds all showed antiproliferative effect on human T-lym phoid leukemia cells.
