Abstract
Dioscorea doryophora contains diosgenin which is an important precursor for the synthesis of medicinal steroids. The tissue culture method was therefore studied in order to produce diosgenin in large quantities from callus derived from different source organs. It was found that microtuber-derived callus (either from field-grown or tissue-culture plants) contained the highest diosgenin content (ca. 3.3%). Suspension cells established from callus also showed that microtuber-derived callus was the best material for diosgenin production.
