Abstract
The wild tea plants are found in Taiwan and mainly distributed at the elevation of 650-1500 meters in the forests. Their agronomic characteristics are somewhat close to those of Assam type tea, with unique adventitious shoots arising from underground stems. Four protective districts of wild tea plants have been set up respectively in central, south and eastern Taiwan for the preservation of wild tea germplasm. A promising line B-40-58, obtained from the hybridization between Taiwan wild tea and an Assamica variety introduced from Burma, has been gone through regional tests of breeding programs.
