夏威夷品種木瓜，品質優異，最符合外銷之要求。但在臺灣栽培結果，性變之表現極為顯著，致正常果產量甚低；又因低溫期間糖度大減(8)，嚴重影其品質，證明臺灣氣候對木瓜之栽培，并非適宜。欲求改善正常果實之產生，正常兩性花之人工自交可以逐步獲得其效果。如欲保持其優良品質，則宜就A32與A5之雜交後代中選取之。
Fruit quality of the papaya varieties of Hawaii strain, trying to grow at Chia-yj Agricultural Experiment Station, are excellent. They are good for export, but unfortunately, they appeared sex changes throughout all the year, and produced during the cold season, a lot of carpellodic fruits which are unmarketable, or produced a lot of abortive flowers during the warm season, resulting in a lack of fruit production, so that the yields of these varieties have been much poorer in Taiwan than in Hawaii. Another problem is the quick decrease of sugar content of the fruits, when they developed through the cold season, and thereafter matured before May. Such fruits are not preferable on the market. It showed that the climatic conditions in Taiwan are not favorable to the production of papaya.
In this study, it was found that artificial self-pollination of the normal hermaphrodite flowers revealed a tendency to decrease the production of carpellodic fruits. It is suggested to be a method used for improving the varieties in decreasing the production of carpellodic fruits.
In keeping the excellent fruit quality, it is suggested to use the varieties A32 (Kapo-ho) and A5 (a dwarfish variety) as parents for cross-breeding and select the progenies desirable for export.
