Abstract
Field experiments were conducted respectively on celery, cabbage, garlic and ginger, and the nutrient uptakes as well as the fertilizer responses were studied.
1. The amounts of major inorganic nutrients absorbed per crop by the four vegetables are respectively as follows;
2. Among the major inorganic nutrients, celery and cabbage absorb nitrogen and calcium the most, potassium the next, and phosphorus the least. The fertilizer responses also follow in similar order, and liming is particularly effective in acid soils. The optimum rates of N, P2O5 and K2O for celery and cabbage are 225, 90, 150 and 250-350, 80, 80-160 kg/ha, respectively, which are quite agreeable with the nutrient uptake character.
3. Among the major inorganic nutrients, garlic absorb potassium and nitrogen more, and calcium and phosphorus less. The fertilizer response is greater in nitrogen than in others. The optimum rates of N, P2O5 and K2O are 100-200, 30-60 and 50-100 kg/ha respectively.
4. Among the major inorganic nutrients ‘ginger absorb potassium the most, nitrogen the next, and calcium and phosphorus the least. The crop response to potassium is also the greatest. The rates of fertilizers recommended are 50-100, 150-200 and 200-250 kg/ha for N, P2O5 and K2O respectively, which is also quite corresponding to the nutrient uptake character.
5. The growth and nutrient uptake processes of the four vegetables are shown diagrammatically.
