Abstract
Nitrogen (N) is one of the major factors affecting both production efficiency and ground water quality. As the concern over nitrate (NO3-) pollution increases, ammonium (NH4+) nutrition will undoubtedly become more important for crop production, especially when high efficient nitrification inhibitors are being developed as N management tools. However, there is the misgiving that crops may not perform well under NH4+-N. This is a legitimate concern because breeding programs and selections have been conducted under predominantly NO3--N environments which might inadvertently eliminate the trait for NH4+-N utilization. As a first step towards developing varieties capable of performing under NH4+-N, maize is being used as a model system to evaluate the mechanism and efficiency of NH4+ assimilation so that a biochemical selection index can be developed for breed in gprograms.
