Abstract
蟎蜱亞綱目至目有記錄者約有1, 700屬30,000種，但據學者之推估，尚未記錄者應為此數之20倍。蟎蜱類是地球上動物相中最常出現者，從陸地到空中、到海洋、到山巔均有分布，在南北極也有牠的蹤蹟，其種類和棲息地非常複雜。尤其在土壤中種類及個體更是繁多，在溫帶森林土壤內含豐富的腐植質，甲蟎的種類個體重量竟佔無脊椎動物總重量的7%。甲蟎將腐敗的植物組織嚼碎並排出糞粒，可增加微生物分解的表面積，對土壤之肥力助益極大，在森林生態系中扮演很重要的角色。
The Acari, comprising mites and ticks, are distributed worldwide and have successfully colonized both terrestrial and aquatic habitats. They abound in forest and grassland soils and in temporary accumulations of organic debris Unlike other arachnids, which are free-living, a large number of acarines have developed intimate associations with other animals. Ticks are parasitic on a wide range of vertebrate hosts. Radford (1950) estimated there to be approximately 30, 000 described species of Acari, distributed among more than 1, 700 genera, but the number of undescribed species could exceed this total by up to 20 fold.
