Abstract
An economically viable, environmentally sustainable, secure and safe agricultural system is dependent on the availability of a genetically diverse assemblage of plant, farm animal and microbial bioresources that is conserved, managed and utilized appropriately. Genetic diversity is raw material for selection and improvement in productivity and quality, resistance to pests and diseases, adaptability to changing and adverse growing conditions, materials for bio-based products, and contributes to the creation of a safe and secure food system. However, the genetic diversity of Canadian bioresources, like many others in the world is threatened by genetic erosion of crop and livestock gene pools, habitat loss, and for social and economic reasons[1]. The intent is to present various conservation and management practices which Canada has implemented to reduce the risk of genetic loss of crop and livestock gene pools with emphasis on genebanks.
