Abstract
A yeast-like symbiote (YLS) was found in the fat body cells of the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens, being symbiotic association with every developmental stage of its host. The YLS is located in the abdomen only but never in head or thorax; measuring ca. 13–15 μ long and 5–6 μ wide, and propagates by budding. The symbiotes are distributed uniformly in the first and second instar, while they were often scattered in groups over the fat body from the third instar through adult stage. The mycetocytes harbouring YLS tended to fuse with one another into syncytia in female adults. The YLS moved into the posterior pole of the primary oocyte in the ovariole through the epithelial plug of the ovary and formed a symbiote ball in the oocyte, the symbiotes were then transmitted to the next generation by the transovarial infection. The total number of YLS increased with successive development of the host up to oviposition in female, and then gradually decreased due to egg-laying. The maximal symbiote number in male lay at the fifth nymphal instar, the population density declined after this stage. The females harboured more symbiotes than the males during the fifth nymphal and adult stage. Zusammenfassung Über einen intrazellulären hefeähnlichen Symbionten der Braunen Heuschrecke, Nilaparvata lugens Stål. 1.
