Abstract
Rice varieties bred in Taiwan had lower tolerance to drought in the vegetative growth stage. Generally drought tolerance in Japonica rice is lower than that of Indica rice. The advantages of submerged condition in the vegetative growth are that it provides more available soil nutrient and higher uptake efficiency. For rice grown in the second cropping season, it is suggested to practice soil-drying cycle at 29 days after transplanting to improve unfavorable soil environment. A depth of 5-7 cm irrigation is required in both the primary panicle formation stage and heading stage. During grain filling stage, results from field experiments showed that reduced irrigation water may give higher grain yield. The high soil moisture tension during grain filling stage reduced crude protein content of rice grain. When rice plant accumulated more-than-enough nitrogen content during grain filling stage, high soil moisture tension can reduce nitrogen uptake in rice and thus induce positive effect to grain quality.
