1. The present experiment was made to investigate the pathogenicity of the different single-spore cultures of P. oryzae Cav. isolated from a single lesion of rice plant, and to examine the variability of their virulence during successive single-spore cultures. Isolate 3K-39S obtained from a lesion of susceptible infection type on variety Hua-yu 58 collected from Kaohsiung area, and isolate 3C-1681R obtained from a lesion of resistant infection ype on a newly introduced variety collected from Chiayi area were subjected to the single-spore isolation. Ten single-spore cultures derived from each isolate were tested for their pathogenicity on ten differential rice varieties by means of artificial inoculation.
