Sweet potato is one of the important crop in Taiwan. Its acreage and production are only little less than rice. As the other crops do, the sweet potato is usually attacked by many kinds of insect pests during its growing seasons, and sweet potato weevil (Cylas formicarius Fab.) seems to be the most destructive one. The weevil attacks both the upper part and the ground tuber as well. The infested tubers, usually producing an unpleasant odour, is not able to be used for food or feed.
The present paper was to study the sweet potato weevil, its seasonal occurance, regional distribution and the life history, in order that this pest could be well controlled.
This observations were carried out at three locations, Tainan, Taichung and Chiayi during the year 1956-1958. Field records were made at a half month interval, and 60 host plants were examined each time. The life history was studied in the insectary at Tainan Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station.
The following results were obtained:
1. The seasonal occurance of weevil appeared to be more abundant in spring than in autumn. The numbers of weevil counted on 60 host plants, as two, years’ average, were 5,617 for spring season and 375 for autumn season, it was almost 15 times more weevils to occur in spring than in autumn. This fact confirmed that to grow sweet potato in autumn might have less weevil infestation.
2. The distribution of weevil at different localities was also significantly different. The numbers of weevil to be counted on 60 host plants were 9,907 in Tainan, 1,881 in Taichung and 195 in Chiayi. The less weevils found in Chiayi may be due to the crop rotation system operated there.
3. Since we found from the 4th to 6th months of sweet potato growing in spring, the weevil usually reached to the greatest population, so to grow early varietes of sweet potato or to harvest earlier will be successful to reduce the infestation of this weevil.
4. According to the life history study, the weevil produced 8 generations in a year, and it was 22-86 days for each generation. The development period of egg was 4-20 days; larval stage 12-40 days; pupal stage 2-30 days and adult stage from emergence to oviposition 5-32 days.
