1. This experiment was conducted to ascertain the root distribution of cover crops in the soil under natural conditions. 21 varieties of cover crops such as Bahia grass were planted on the slope land of Fengshan Tropical Horticultural Experiment Station in May 1970, and the investigation was carried out with the method of cutting soil plate containing gravelly loam in June 1971.
2. After one year’s growing, the root distribution of Bahia grass A44 varieties was the most deep, the depth extended to 59cm in the soil, whereas, the root depth of Paspalum Commersonii Lank was the most shallow, only extended to 30cm in the soil. Generally speaking, the root distributions of Bahia grass lines were deeper, most of them were found in depth of 42-59cm.
3. The amounts of root system of cover crops varied significantly. The dry root weight of Bahia grass All0 variety was 68.1 grams per 1,200cm3, the heaviest in the varieties tested, whereas, the dry root weight of Guinea grass was the least, only 6.9 grams per l,200cm3. About 75-80% of root distribution were found in the A layer (0-l5cm depth), especially Paspalurn Commersonii Lank amounted to 91.3%. The root system of Indigofera Spicata Forssk, with one main root and .fewer branch roots and root hair, was different from other varieties.
4. There were striking difference in the distribution of root system between the Bahia grass varieties with narrow-leaves and broad-leaves. The root system of broad-leaves variety was deeper and closer than that of narrow-leaves variety.
