The purpose of this study was to estimate the variation in mungbean germplasm. Ninty-seven accessions were randomly sampled from the National Plant Genetic Resources Center (NPGRC) while the local cultivar Tainan 5 (TN5) was included as a check. Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) was investigated in this study. Multivariate analysis was used to estimate the variation in quantitative characters (five vegetative traits, four pod traits, four seed traits) in the spring and summer crops of 1998 at Taipei. The 92 accessions were amplified by RAPD and 14 primers were used. Twenty polymorphic molecular markers were produced, which are a potential source of germplasm information. Six of the 20 markers were core primers for mungbean germplasm. After RAPD analysis, Nei and Li’s genetic similarity formula was used to calculate distances for matrix value. Based on the matrix values, cluster analysis was done. Two different groups (A wide-distance group, B near-distance group) were separated by RAPD markers. Then, according to the results, a stepwise multiple regression analysis of quantitative characters on grain yield was used for group effect. RAPD group results were the same as the use of quantitative characters on grain yield.
