The brown planthopper has been an important insect pest in most rice cultivated areas in Asia. The causes of outbreak of the brown planthopper during recent years have not yet been fully understood. However, it is suspected that the cultivation of high yielding varieties and the change of cultural practices may have provided an environment conductive to the insect infestation.en_US
