Owing to the tropical and subtropical climates in Taiwan, mushroom grows well only in the low temperature seasons, i. e late autumn, winter and early spring. The high temperature, above 25°C, is favorable to the survival and epidemic of the diseases, and consequently, successful control of diseases is necessary to ensure higher yield and better quality of mushroom.
There are a number of diseases attacking mushroom in Taiwan. These diseases include wet bubble (Mycogone perniciosa), dry bubble (Verticillium fungicola), cobweb (Hypomyces rosellus), bacterial blotch (Pseudomonas tolaasii), bacterial pit (Pseudomonas fluorescens), and mummy disease (Pseudomonas sp.). Among them, wet bubble, dry bubble and bacterial blotch are the most prevalent diseases. The others are rather minor, occur only ocassionally and considered to be of no economic importance. These minor diseases are not further discussed in this paper.
