1958 年由英國 ICI Ltd . (現已由先正達 Syngenta 銷售)研發巴拉刈於早( paraquat ) ( Agricultural Chemicals Book 11 Herbicides , 1998 )成功,為速效、接觸型除草劑。嘉磷塞( glyphosate )於 1 972 年由美國孟山都( Monsanto ) ( Agricultural Chemicals Book 11 Herbicides , 1 998 )研發成功,為廣效、系統型除草劑。在果園中,廣泛噴施嘉磷塞,因具系統移行性,方便施用,效果持久。在短期作物上,則因巴拉刈具有速效特性,而廣為應用。於 1981 年由德國赫斯特( HOechst AG ,現已由拜耳 Bayer 銷售)研發出固殺草( glufosinate - ammonium ) ( Agricultural Chemica1S Book 11 Herbicides , 1998 ) ,但它既沒有巴拉刈速效的特性,亦未能如嘉磷塞般藥效持久,卻因略具移行性的特性,擁有以上兩非選擇性除草劑之優點。適逢 80 年環保意識高漲,固殺草成功找出市場定位,從此嘉磷塞、巴拉刈及固殺草在全球之非選擇性除草劑形成三雄鼎立之局面。
