The flooding tolerance of soybean seeds can be measured by the germination test after 4- day soaking at 25℃. High variation in seed flooding tolerance existed in soybean germplasm as reflected by the range of germination rate from 0 to 100%. Seed flooding tolerance was controlled by one/two effective factors, and both additive and dominance variances and high narrow sense heritability were suggested. Seed water uptake was related negatively and significantly to flooding tolerance under normal imbibition. However, the relationship was not significant under flooding stress.
Elongation ability of seedlings differed greatly among varieties. The relationship between flooding tolerance and elongation ability of seedling was not significant.
Storability of seeds was also different significantly among varieties and was a genetic character with heritability of 86%. The storability was related positively and significantly to flooding tolerance.
