Isolate AO-3 of Sarocladium oryzae obtained from typical lesions of sheath rot and isolate AO-1 from browning sheath of rice plants showing sterility symptoms were inoculated on cultivar Tainung 67 at different ages. Booting stage was found the most susceptible to sheath rot inoculated separately or in mixture of the two isolates.
Among the 17 cultivars tested, the percentage of infected panicles, brown-spotted grains and sterility of grains were found more on Indica than Japonica cultivars and Tainung 61 had the least. High correlations were found between the percentage of infected panicles, brown-spotted grains and sterility of grains. No difference in pathogenicity among AO-1, AO-3 and the mixture of the two isolated were observed from the results of the experiments conducted in the greenhouse and in the field.
