There are 3 species of soil insets namely Cylas formicarius Fabricius, Corasposoma oberthuri Jacoby and Anomala expansa Bates attacking sweet potato tubers, especially the first 2 species which are the worst and reduce the commodity in both quantity and quality significantly.
This test was carried out from February of 1963 to March of 1964 at Tainan and Ilan. 35% aldrin wp, 25% aidrin granular and 2.5% heptachior dust were used as the soil insecticides. The dosage was calculated as 0.5, 1.0 ppm of aidrin and 0.36, 0.54 and 0.73 ppm of heptachior of active ingredient respectively.
The applying method of these 2 kinds and 3 forms of soil insecticides were divided into (1) broadcasted whole area before planting, (2) broadcasted on planting row only before planting and (3) treated on row furrow then covered with soil and planting respectively.
According to the test, it showed that broadcasted whole area of the field with 1 ppm of aidrin cooperated with water, sand and rice husk or 25% aidrin granular. The percentage of reduced tuber yield was below 1.16%, the row furrow treatment was below 3. 0896. However, the check was 26. 04-35.88% respectively.
