Abstract:
Cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitate) is a green plant-vernalization-responsive-type plant, which requires vernalization to induce flowering. This research aimed to study the effects of species and variety of rootstocks on the flowering of the grafted cabbages. In this research, 'K-Y cross' cabbage was used as scion for the grafted cabbage, while the rootstocks were selected from Chinese kale, rape, leaf mustard, Chinese cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. The results show that the grafted cabbage with Chinese kale as rootstock had the highest survival rate. Grafted plants were separately grown in the Experimental Farm, College of Bioresources and Agriculture, National Taiwan University (as a lowland treatment) and Highland Experimental Farm, College of Bioresources and Agriculture, National Taiwan University (as a highland treatment). The flowering rate of each of the grafting combinations in the lowland was 0%. In the highland, the flowering rates of some of the grafting combinations were slightly higher than those of the non-grafted control (50 %), but the highest one was only 57.14%. In addition, no significant difference in days to flowering was found between the grafting combinations and the non-grafted control. These results indicate that the range of the promotion of 'K-Y cross' cabbage flowering by grafting was limited.
