Abstract
There are fifty-two Ponlai (Japonic type) and thirty-eight Native (Indica type) rice varieties had beed tested during the first crop in the year 1954. In order to induce a severe outbreak of blest disease development, an excessive amount of nitrogen fertilizer in form of ammonium sulfate (1500 kg./ha.) were applied both in the uursery bed and paddy field. Seedling of all varieties were inoculated artificially, but in case of paddy field tests no special arrangments were made other than fertilizer application. Aim to have a better yield of spores for inoculation, the seedling of a very susceptible rice variety known as Kunshan-Wu-Shiang-Keng was inoculated previously, thus an abundant of inoculum were obtained from the affected leaves during the course of this experiment. Inspections on disease development of rice seedlings were made 7-14 days after inoculation, and the later stage before heading respectively. Data reviewed from the foregoing tested varieties which could be classified into three groups namely, resistant, intermediate and susceptible according to the type of affected leaf lesions indicated (See Fig.1 on page 34). (The from abridges) It was concluded that the lesional reaction of leaf among rice varieties was significantly correlated between the seedling and the late stage of rice plants.
