Since the discovery of opaque-2 (Mertz, 1964) and floury-2 (Nelson, 1965) genes in maize, it was generally recognized that these mutant genes could increase the lysine content in maize protein. Feeding experiments by various investigators also proved that the nutritive value of this high lysine corn was improved tremendously. Therefore, breeders all over the world started to initiate breeding programs for high lysine corn. However, there was a setback in the development of high lysine corn because both opaque-2 and floury-2 genes had the effect of yield reduction. The purpose of this investigation is to study the effects of opaque-2 and floury-2 genes on kernel weight of maize bred in Taiwan, and the feasibility of developing high lysine corn with normal yielding ability. There are three items to be studied; 1) the effects of opaque-2 and floury-2 genes on kernel weight of segregating ears of inbreds; 2) the effects of opaque-2 gene on kernel weight in single crosses; 3) yield performance of opaque-2 and floury-2 single crosses.
