To explore a single rice crop a year to fit into the rotational system with other crops, 8 Indica hybrid rice strains were tested for their yield potentials and adaptabilities at 8 locations in between the first and second crop seasons when temperatures were high. Their grain yields varied greatiy with the entries and locations. In an overall average, Tainung Sen Hybrid 5, 6 and 10 outyielded the highest yielder, Taichung Sen 10, only by 3.3%－8.2%. However, the yield of Tainung Hybrid 10 at the northern 2 sites reached 6.8t/ha-6.9t/ha or 16%-28% higher than the control, indicating the acceptability of the above-mentioned planting. On the other hand, Tainung Sen Hybrid 1, 7, 11 performed poorly due to their photoperiod sensitivity. At Chiayi (Lutsau), the insect infestation was so severe that the testing plants had to be ratoon-cultured and harvested in November with a yield as higher as 8.5t/ha. The test at another location in Chiayi (Chikou) was completely failed due to the severe insect damage. The single cross hybrids like these generally have a poor general combining ability but show various special combining abilities depending upon varieties and the environments. To explore the possibility of utilizing their special cominbing ability and photoperiod sensitivity to allow the full expression of high yield potential due to hybrid vigor will be our next step of experiments.
