小米為臺灣原住民最古老的食用作物，其栽培歷史悠久，被視為最神聖的作物，具有宗教的重要性，所有農耕儀式都與小米有關，而小米酒更是各族豐年祭不可或缺的祭品。國內小米可能早期隨移民自大陸引進，而中國大陸為小米主要生產國，佔亞洲總產量90%，印度、韓國、日本等僅有7.1%。臺灣小米生產面積在民國50年曾高達6,000公頃，民國70年後因糧食作物品種改良成效豐碩，生活水準日益提高，小米需求也相對減少，至今小米栽培約200~300公頃，以臺東縣最多，屏東縣次之，其物為花蓮、高雄、宜蘭等縣。
New Millet variety - Taitung NO.8 was released at October 31, 2008, and was developed by Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station in Taiwan. This variety was selected from the population of the cross combination. It has many good characteristics such as more resistance to drought, short spike, dwarf, resistant dense, and has a high grain harvest. In the spring cropping season in Taiwan, Taitung NO.8 is with plant height of 101.1 cm, the spike length of 23.1cm, single plant spike weight of 19.6g, grains yield of 2,527 kg/ha and maturity of 119 days. In the fall cropping season in Taiwan, Taitung NO.8 is with plant height of 110.7 cm, the spike length of 22.3cm, single plant spike weight of 23.9g, grains yield of 3,085 kg/ha and maturity of 96 days
