Abstract
The taproot of Ginseng (Panax ginseng) has been used widely in the world due to its diverse biological activities. Meanwhile, the rootlet of ginseng is also very popular that used as the ingredient for medicinal foods because of its rich ginseng flavor and cheaper price (1). However, to reduce the expense of ginseng products in the marketplace, some commercial products are adulterated with ginseng rootlets and still claimed to be the 6-year-old ginseng-made products. Since traditional authentication via physical methods is hardly reliable, a fast and efficient analytical method that can discriminate the ginseng rootlets from ginseng taproots and commercial products is urgently required. In this study, the chemical fingerprinting of dried ginseng taproots with cultivation ages ranging from 1 to 6 years and rootlets from 4 to 6 years were determined using 1H-NMR, and then introduced principle component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) to find patterns in data and express their statistical similarities and differences based on the metabolomic strategy (2). The first two PCs of PCA score plot could explain up to 88.68% of the total variances. The result shows that PC1 was able to discriminate different cultivation ages from 1 to 5 years old from 6 years old on dried ginseng taproot and rootlet samples. PC2 displayed the variance due to the dried ginseng taproot and rootlet samples. CA was performed separately on the dataset obtained from 1H-NMR spectra for confirmation. This quality surveillance method of metabolomics is able to distinguish the dried ginseng rootlet from taproot samples and commercial products accurately.
