Abstract:
Most of the asparagus seedlings of the nine varieties tested commenced flowering in about 4-5months after setting in the northern part of Taiwan (25°N.). Flowering of male plants took place at least 5 weeks earlier than did the female ones. it provides us with an excellent chance to select male plants in the seedling stage. In three out of nine varieties 3.5-14% of andromonoecious plants were encountered. Some plants in a few varieties started to flower in an extremely early seedling stage, say one to two weeks after germination.
