目前世界各國栽培柑桔之主要品種中,人工雜交育成者佔極少數。大多均是自然雜交,或偶然實生實異以及芽條變異而成。因柑桔種籽大多屬多胚性,且其遺傳因子複雜,若將優良形質集成一體極為困難。近年因科學進步關於已往許多困難問題均有改進;加以柑桔育種家之努力,已陸續育成新品種問世,貢獻很大。長此以往欲利用人工雜交以達到吾人所希望之品種,亦並非絕對不可能之事。
The artificial cross-breeding is a practical method for producing new citrus varieties. Its economical importance has been demonstrated in many respects. For example, some varieties of citrange obtained from artificial cross-breeding can be used as a good rootstock; some tanger or tangelo can be used as a fresh fruit variety; the Mammoth grapefruit developeed by the Shihlin Horticultural Experiment Station has been considered a good variety for fresh fruit production.
