Abstract
The relative effectiveness of organic manures and N fertilizer in rice production is discussed. Most of the effect of organic manures is attributed to nitrogen, so that organic manures could be replaced by N fertilizer. Increases in soil organic matter due to organic manures are less significant in tropical and subtropical countries than in temperate regions.
