Abstract
Global lychee production is highly concentrated in the Asia–Pacific region. Australia benefiting from its geographic advantage of spanning nearly 3,000 km across latitudes from north to south, together with a diverse range of cultivars, possesses the longest lychee production season worldwide. In contrast, Thailand capitalizes on its unique early-maturing tropical cultivars, enabling harvest as early as late March. Australia and Thailand exhibit markedly different characteristics in cultivation practices, pest and disease management, postharvest handling, and marketing strategies. Australia has developed highly standardized production systems and mechanized management, complemented by a well-established cold-chain infrastructure to maintain fruit quality. In Thailand, lychee production is broadly divided into two major regions: the northern (subtropical) and central (tropical) zones. The northern region predominantly cultivates the ‘Hong Huay’ cultivar using an open-center pruning system, whereas the central region focuses on “tropical lychee” cultivars with minimal chilling requirements for flowering, thereby establishing a distinct market advantage. In recent years, Taiwan has actively engaged in collaboration with Australia, utilizing the southern hemisphere advantage to establish off-season production bases. As the global lychee industry strives for sustainable development, it faces common challenges, including climate change, pest and disease pressures, postharvest management issues, and labor shortages. Consequently, the industry is accelerating its transformation through advances in breeding technologies, precision cultivation practices, and standardized cold-chain systems to enhance resilience against climate variability and increasing market competition.
