Proceedings of A Symposium on the Experimental Results of Special Crops 1997
The seed tubers of long-shaped yam (Dioscorea batatas) were planted in late April. In order to investigate plant growth and tuber development, the plants were harvested each month since the middle June. Fresh weight of tuber, root and haulm were measured. The results showed that the fresh haulm weight was Thl.3g per plant in June. From June to July, the haulm grew vigorously. The fresh haulm weight increased to 527.2g in middle July. After that, the haulm growth slowed down, and reached the maximum 636.1g in middle September. During October, the leaf fell initially, and the fresh haulm weight decreased. Considering the tuber initiation and development, the fresh tuber weight was already 33.3g per plant in middle June. It clearly indicates that tuber initiation was earlier than June. The fresh tuber weight was 580.0g in middle July, and increased quickly to 1507.2g in middle August. The fresh tuber weight continuously increased to 2446.0g in November.
