Proceeding of A Symposium on Development and Utilization of Resources of Medicinal Plants in Taiwan
The demand of Chinese medicinal herbs such as Angelica sinensis, Adenophora triphylla, Codonopsis radix, Aconitum formosanum, Bletilla formosana, Angelica dahurica, Fritillaria hupehensis, Rehmannia glutinosa, Platycodon grandiflorum, Polygoni multiflori, Anoectochillus formosanus, Pinellia ternata and Bupleurum falcatum has been increasing continuously in both domestic and foreign markets. These medicinal herbs have been used widely for thousands of years to nourish the vital essence and to release body heat, with special benefit to the blood. Recent research has shown that they also possesses analgesic, sedative, expectorant, hapoglycemic, diuretic and laxative effects. Although these plants are indigenous species to Taiwan, they are endangered species now after prolonged and extensive collection. In view of this, Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute and China Medical College have jointly carried out researches aimed to develop resources of Chinese medicial herbs through the techniques of plant tissue culture. Cell suspension cultures were also established from Angelica dahurica and Dioscorea doryophora. The useful compounds produced from callus or suspension cell were isolated and analyzed. The methods established from tissue culture will be valuable for medicinal industry. This paper summarized the results we have obtained from the above-mentioned herbs in the last ten years.
