Pleione Jormosana Hayata is an alpine orchid which has annually replaced corms and single decidous leaves. The sprouting and anthesis occurs three weeks after cold storage (5℃ for 2 months). The life span of Pleione formosana is about 3.5 years. The life processes runs from bud visibility in the first year, to flower formation in the second year, anthesis and bulbing in the third year, through nutritional supply for anthesis and early daughter corm growth and senescence in the fourth year.
Dry weight of daughter corms grown in the high altitude of Mei-Feng (2100 m) are greater than corms grown at Wu-Shah (1200 m) and Taipei (50 m). Flower initiation occurs after the leaf has fully expanded while the corm is growing actively. The optimum temperature for growth and flower differentiation in ranges 15-20℃. Flower initiation cannot occur at night temperature above 25℃.
The marketable size of corm is above 5 gram which has 60 percentage of flowering. The production of salable corns depends on size of mother corms, number and weight increase and planting density.
