For protecting the production of gourd crops, which are important vegetables in Penhu area, Athel tamarisk was planted as windbreak purpose. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of Athel tamarisk windbreak on the microclimate and the production of gourd crops. The experiment results from 2001 to 2002 were summarized as follows. The average air temperature under the windbreak of AtheL tamarisk was 0.5 ℃ higher than that under the open field, and the wind speed and the amount of evaporation decreased 72.4% and 35.9%, respectively. The effect of windbreak on salt concentration of air varied depending upon the height above the gourd. At the height of 0.5 m, the average salt concentration decrease 80.3%, and it decreased 87.2% at the height of 1.5 m. On the leeward of Athel tamarisk windbreak, it was found that both solar radiation and sunshine hour per day were lower than that under the open field. Yields of gourd crops grown under the Athel tamarisk windbreak were increased than that grown under the open field in autumn season. In spring season, the yields were increased at the 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 m from the windbreak, but were decreased at the 2, 8, and 9 m from the windbreak relative to those grown under the open field.
