Abstract
Geographic Information System(GIS) is a computer software system (often including hardware) with which spatial information may be captured, stored, analyzed, displayed and retrieved. GIS has been applied for detecting pest infestation and early stages of insect outbreaks at regional or national scale. GIS also makes it possible to quantify and evaluate relationships among pest distribution, phenological factors, climatic variables, topographic attributes, crop mortality and economic loss. Through the help of GIS, land managers will be able to decide an acceptable response prior to the arrival of the inevitable damage caused by various pests. The Global Positioning System(GPS) provides full-time and fast ground coordinates data within meters of accuracy by receiving signals from earth-orbiting satellites. GPS has been used to record latitude-longitude coordinate data of infested localities. Precise location data obtained from GPS fit nicely into GIS and this, combined with other multiple data sets, allows a more accurate monitoring of pest dynamics. This paper introduces principles and functions of GIS and GPS and discusses different applications of GIS and GPS on pest management.
