Abstract
This chapter reviews two parts. The first part discusses the effect of light intensity and light quality on photosynthesis and physiological characteristics in rice plants. The relationship between light intensity and photosynthesis is hyperbolic. The stomatal resistance decreases in an exponential function with increasing light intensity. The photosynthetic rate of rice plants shows the Emerson effect. It indicates that the combination of photosystem I (>685nm) and photosystem II (<685nm ) makes higher photosynthetic rate than the single system. The second part discusses about the light reception of rice population. The ideal plant type of rice variety has the small leaf angle and the short leaf with lower light extinction coefficient. It appears that this type of rice plant has more light intensity among the varietal community. The period of shading is found to be critical to the decrease of dry matter production and yield. The first critical period is at the meiosis stage and the second is at the milky and dough stage.
