Proceeding of A Symposium on Fruit Production, Research and Development in Taiwan
The golden age of Taiwan pineapple industry bas been disappearing recently, because the prosperity of industry and international trading has significantly increased the production cost in agriculture, and the severe marketing compeition from the Phillipines and Thailand has made the export of Taiwan pineapple much more difficult than before. This has resulted in the decrease of pineapple production acreage. Although, in the past, the product was mainly for export, today it mainly relys on the domestic market. It is expected that in the future the Taiwan pineapple industry will get more impact from the still increasing international trading activity. Therefore it would be necessary to emphasize the fresh eating varieties and to enhance quality, in order to satisfy the need of domestic fresh market. In the aspect of production system, it would be necessary to plant pineapple in the "Specialized produation area" setted in the most suitable areas, to manage the crop through farmer's cooperation or contracter's taking over, and to use labor saving cultivation methods. And an effective cropping season adjustmant is needed to stablize the price in the market. Besides, the improvement of variety and cultivation technique are also crucial for increasing the producer's income.
