台灣柑橘產業近五十年來迅速發展，栽培面積曾達五萬公頃，在引種、選種、健康種原培育與雜交育種等品質改良工作皆有所成果。至今引進170品種品系，為品種多樣化推行、健康種原培育與雜交育種之基礎。原生種扁實檸檬（Citrus depressa Hay.）近年來逐漸發展成保健果汁。主要栽培品種包括椪柑、桶柑及柳橙均有發現自然變異者，部份並已發展成重要的栽培品種。柑橘類品種多，種間乃至屬間之親和力佳，有利於雜交育種，但生育上普遍存在幼年期長及多胚性的現象，則減低了雜交育種種的成效，目前已育成1實生選拔品種及2雜交品質。未來之及展可朝主要栽培之品種品系改良，即自然變異品種與優良母樹選拔、寬皮柑類特定性狀之改良包括無籽、果皮可食用、大果型或低酸早熟。
Taiwan’s citrus industry developed rapidly in recent fifty years, and the area under cultivation once reached 53,000 hectares. The cultivar improvement work including introduction, selection, production of healthy stock and cross breeding has good results. Until now 170 cultivars/lines has been introduced, which is the basis of cultivars diversity, production of healthy stock and cross breeding. Depressa (Citrus depressa Hay.), a native species has developed into a healthy-prompting juice in recent years. Spontaneous mutants of main cultivars including Ponakn, Tankan, Liu-cheng orange were found, and some has developed into important varieties. There is good cross affinity between citrus cultivars, however the long juvenile phase and polyembryony phenomenon reduce the effectiveness of cross breeding. A seedling selection and two hybrids were bred. Future breeding goals in Taiwan can be focused on the selection of natural mutant and parent tree of main cultivars and cross breeding of seedless, larger, peel-edible, low-acid or early season mandarins.
