Kin-men)，中葉榕(Ficus microcarpa L. f. cv.
Tumors were found on several cultivars of Ficus microcarpa from different areas of Taiwan. They mainly occurred on the wounded crown, trunk, and shoots. The size of these tumors were around 5-10 cm and sometimes could reach 30 cm in diameter. Five strains of bacteria isolated from gall tissues were characterized. They were Gram negative, aerobic rods with 1-6 peritrichum flagella and were identified as Aobacteriwn tumefaciens by the Biolog Microplate system. Biovar identification tests showed that strains of the bacterium belong to biovar 1. Inoculation of the bacterium on to slices of carrot roots, small tumors produced on the cambium area 4-5 days after inoculation. Upon inoculation of tomato and Ficus plants with the bacterium, tumors was formed on wounded sites about 7-10 days and 3 weeks, respectively, after inoculation. The tumors on Ficus were small and light brown initially, and gradually increased in size and became brown to dark brown. The tumors on tomato were white to pale green at first, then gradually turned into yellowish with size about 1 cm in diameter. The leaves of tomato adjacent to the inoculated area were flaccid and gradually wilted. This is the first report of crown gall disease on Ficus in Taiwan.
