由本省各處所收集的茄科細菌性斑點病菌(Xanthomonas campestris pv. uesicatoria)58個菌株，均屬革蘭氏陰性桿狀細菌，具單極生鞭毛，大小0.5-0.7×0.9-1.7µm，在馬鈴薯葡萄糖瓊脂培養基上形成黏濕，圓形，突起，具亮光的黃色菌落，可在37℃下生長，也可在含4% Na CI的培養基中生長，但利用D(+)cellobiose, glucose, D-mannitol, maltose, D(+) mannose, D(+) trehalose及sucrose等碳水化合物時，無產酸反應（培養第七天之觀察），不會產生吲哚，不具Kovacs氧化酵素及苯丙氨酸脫氨酵素，能還原蔗糖，液化明膠，水解酪素，產生硫化氫，具有過氧化氫酵素及解脂能力，但在41℃下之生長，水解澱粉及還原硝酸的能力則依菌株而異。以ECW, ECW-10R,3-25-2-7，及ECW-30R等甜椒品系當鑑別寄主，可將供試58個菌株區分為三種生理小種（病原型），其中21個菌株屬於race 1, 6個菌株屬於race 2, 31個菌株屬於race 3。選取Xv 58菌株(race 3)以戊二醛固定後製成的抗血清，可將供試58個菌株區分為三種血清型，其反應分別為完全融合、刺狀(Spur)反應及不反應等三種，以Xv 65苗株(race 2)所製成的抗血清也得到相同的三種血清型歸類，但與Xv 58抗血清反應為完全融合者，與Xv 65抗血清反應則為刺狀反應，這些血清型與病原型之間沒有任何相關性存在。
Fifty- eight strains of Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria isolated from bactreial spot-infected tissues of tomato, chilli and pepper from central, eastern and southern Taiwan were characterized. They were Gram-negative rods, about 0.5-0.7 X0.9-1.7µm, motile by a single polar flagellum. Colonies on potato dextrose agar were smooth, round, mucoid, glistening and yellow. All strains grew at 37℃ and in nutrient broth containing 4% NaC1, but no acid reaction from utilization of glucose, D (+) cellobiose, maltose, D (+) trehalose, sucrose, D-mannitol or mannose was observed at the 7th day after incubation. All strains liquefied gelatin, hydrolysed casein, reduced sucrose, produced hydrogen sulfide, possessed catalase and lipolytic activity, but did not produce indole, Kovacs oxidase and phenylalanine deaminase. Strains varied with the ability to reduce nitrate, to hydrolyse starch and to grow at 41℃. By using Early Calwonder (ECW), ECW-10R, line 3-25-2-7, and ECW-30 R as differential hosts, 3 races were identified in Taiwan. Among the 58 strains tested, 21 strains were race 1, 6 strains were race 2 and 31 strains were race 3. On the basis of reactions with an antiserum against strain Xv 58, the 58 strains could be divided into 3 serovars. With antiserum against Xv65, the same serological groupings were also obtained, however, serovars were not correlated with races.
