Papiya red scale, Aonidiejje inornata Mckenzic, has been found injuring papaya in southern part of Taiwan by Takahashi since 1939. But there was not any paper dealing with this pest after the world war II.
This scale has become aburkdant in recent years on the new varieties of papaya, Sunrise Solo and Kapoho Solo, which were introduced from Hawaii in 1967. The scale insect was firstly found damaging on the pseudostem of papaya on which the small fruits were about bearing, and then spreading out on the whole surface of the pseuodstem and the fruits. As a result, they reduced the market value of the fruits, and weakened the vigor of the trees and finally caused the trees to be snapped in the midIle of the trunk.
The occurrence of the scales was closely associated with the vigor of the papaya especially the crawlers of the scale, which appeared more abundant during the stage when the fruits of papaya were settings but reduced in numbers gradully as the surface of the pseudostem was all occupied by the dead bodies and the secretion of the scales.
Four insecticides were tested to be effective. These were Supracide 40% EC 0.05 %, Malathion5 0% EC 0.10%. Anthio 33% EC 0.05% and Demethoate 44% EC 0.05%. They must be applied at the beginning of the establishment of the scales. Two applications at 10 day intervals would give satisfactory control.
